Youth Flag Football Formats: 4v4, 5v5, and 7v7 Explained

Why Format Matters

The number of players on the field changes everything: field size, play complexity, how many touches each child gets, and how fast the game moves. Choosing the right format for your age group is one of the most important decisions a league can make.

4v4 Flag Football

Best for ages 5-7. Four players per side on a small field (roughly 30 yards long by 20 yards wide) means every child is involved on every play. There is nowhere to hide, which is actually a good thing at this age — everyone touches the ball, everyone pulls flags.

• Simple formations — usually one QB and three receivers
• No center snap — the QB starts with the ball
• Short play clock keeps the game moving
• Maximum touches per player per game

5v5 Flag Football

Best for ages 7-12. This is the most popular format in NFL FLAG recreational leagues. The field is typically 30 yards by 53 yards (half the width of a full field). Five players per side introduces basic route concepts and defensive assignments without overwhelming young players.

• One center, one QB, three eligible receivers
• Introduces the snap and basic line play
• Defensive rushers must wait for a "blitz count" in most rulesets
• Good balance of individual involvement and team concepts

7v7 Flag Football

Best for ages 12 and up, and high school varsity. Seven players per side on an 80-yard field (or sometimes 70 yards for middle school) is the format used by NFHS for sanctioned high school play. This is the competitive standard — the same format that will be played at the 2028 Olympics.

• Full route trees and zone/man coverage schemes
• More specialized positions (slot receivers, safeties, linebackers)
• Requires deeper playbooks and more practice time
• Statistics are more detailed — passing, rushing, receiving, defensive stats
