How to Set Up a Flag Football Field: Dimensions and Markings
Complete guide to flag football field dimensions for 4v4, 5v5, and 7v7, including no-run zones, end zones, marking techniques, and adapting shared fields.
Getting the Field Right
A properly marked field is the foundation of a well-run game. Players need clear boundaries, officials need visible lines, and coaches need consistent dimensions.
Dimensions by Format
4v4 (ages 5-7): 30 yards long x 20 yards wide, two 5-yard end zones. 5v5 (ages 7-12, NFL FLAG): 30 yards long x 25-53 yards wide, 5-yard end zones. 7v7 (high school, adult): 80 yards long x 40 yards wide, 10-yard end zones.
No-Run Zones
No-run zones are 5-yard areas before each end zone (and sometimes at midfield) where the offense must pass. Mark them with a different color of cones to distinguish from regular yard lines.
How to Mark Your Field
Equipment: measuring tape (100+ feet), 30-50 flat disc cones, 4-6 tall pylons, optional field paint. Steps: measure corner points, place pylons at end zone corners, run sideline cones every five yards, mark end zone lines and no-run zones in contrasting colors, walk the field to verify.
Adapting Shared Fields
A soccer field (100-110 x 70 yards) can fit two flag football fields side by side. Use portable cones rather than paint when sharing. Store pre-counted bags organized by color for 10-minute setup. Arrive 15 minutes early to walk for hazards.
